Del Valle’s photos are part of a significant art exhibit “Pride: 40 Years of Protest &amp; Celebration” that The History Project is presenting in collaboration with the Boston Center for Adult Education and runs through June 30th at the BCAE. The History Project was established in 1980 by a group of historians, activists and archivists. The organization is the only group focused exclusively on preserving the history of Boston’s LGBT community and on making that history accessible to future generations. We talked to Orlando about the exhibit, The History Project and issues facing our LGBT community.<br /><br />Massachusetts is celebrating its 8th anniversary of legalizing gay marriage. When asked what his reaction was to President Obama finally coming out in support of marriage equality Del Valle stated, “Everyone wants what they want when they want it, which is the kind of sensibility that we have today. I’m thrilled that he has and I know that he wanted to do it. I understand that people say, ‘Well it’s about time and that you’re too late’ but the reality is that Massachusetts is not the rest of the country and not the rest of the world. What he does and how he does it has to be really controlled and resonate so he will be re-elected. Otherwise we’ll have a country that will be ruled by essentially corporate interests which is all about money and not about anything else. And the first ones to go will be people of color, gay and lesbian and transgender people, I mean that kind of thing. So I’m, happy that he did it and I think it was very brave of him.”<br /><br />Drawn from The History Project’s archive, “Pride: 40 Years of Protest &amp; Celebration” traces the development of Pride in Boston from a sparsely attended protest against the War in Vietnam to a massive celebration that draws hundreds of thousands of participants in June. The pieces displayed in the exhibition showcase the immense cultural and political changes that have affected New England’s LGBTQ communities over the decades. Along with Del Valle’s photos are black and white portraits by photographer Joel Benjamin and artifacts including banners, buttons and t-shirts. The exhibit reflects the rich diversity of our LGBTQ community and the role of Pride in creating a safe space for self-expression. A pioneer in helping lesbians and gay men become parents, RSC has been serving clients throughout the United States and Europe. Gay couples can become parents by the same assisted reproductive technologies that enable infertile heterosexual couples to have babies and the good news is that it is possible to have your own biological child. Dr. Pang and his husband have two sons through IVF with donor eggs and gestational surrogacy. We talked to Dr. Pang about these procedures and issues facing our LGBT community.<br /><br />When asked how he became involved with reproductive services for gay and lesbian couples Dr. Pang stated, “I joined the practice in 1993 as the Associate Medical Director and in 1997 I was appointed to be the Medical Director of the Third Party Reproduction team which specializes in treating people who need either an egg donor or a gestational surrogate or both, to become parents. Now in 1997, all of the patients who required egg donation or surrogacy were heterosexual but in 1998 we were first approached by a male couple who sought to become parents through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. At that time no other fertility clinic in the area would agree to provide them with assisted reproduction services but we welcomed them immediately. Over the next five years we went on to help this couple have a total of three children through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. And in the past fifteen years, we have gone on to help many other male couples become parents through egg donation and gestational surrogacy. With a few rare exceptions, virtually all male couples who have gone through this process have been successful and some have even returned to have a second or third baby. Now getting back to the reproductive services for lesbians we have always provided donor insemination services for lesbians since our practice opened our doors in 1988. In the mid to late 1990’s I treated a few lesbian couples in which one of them wanted to conceive but was unable to do so because of ovarian failure so her partner would provide eggs for her to conceive with through a process that mimics egg donation. While most lesbians continue to use alternative insemination with donor sperm to have children, recently, some have opted to do what I have come to refer to as reciprocal IVF where one partner provides the eggs which are inseminated with donor sperm, and the other partner gestates the pregnancy. Now this is an interesting concept because these lesbian couples are not doing it because of medical necessity but electively by choice. Because this was a new concept which didn’t have a name, I coined the term “reciprocal IVF” to describe this elective IVF process. Reciprocal IVF allows both women in the relationship to be part of the process of having their child or children together.”<br /><br />RSC is holding an LGBT Open House on June 13th. Vito Russo was a founding member of three pivotal gay rights groups starting with the Gay Activists Alliance in the early 1970s. Russo was also a key voice in the creation of both Act Up the AIDS activist group credited with revolutionizing the federal approval process for new drugs and the influential media watchdog the Gay &amp; Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The Vito Russo Award is named in his memory at the GLAAD Media Awards each year and is presented to an openly gay or lesbian member of the media community for their outstanding contribution in combating homophobia. Russo also wrote the groundbreaking book The Celluloid Closet in 1981 that was later turned into the documentary of the same name that brought attention to how our LGBT community had been censored and depicted in unacceptable cruel stereotypes since the beginning of film. Vito Russo died way too early of AIDS in 1990 at the age 44.<br /><br />When asked what his commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Schwarz stated, “Well Vito was inspiring to me because his main issue was visibility and being out and showing the world who we are. I think the number one thing that you can do for the gay and lesbian civil rights struggle is to be out because if you’re out they can’t stereotype you and they can’t defame you and that’s always been his issue. Whether it was visibility during the gay liberation movement, encouraging people to come out to their families, to their coworkers and his struggle was also to show gay and lesbian lives on the screen, to make our lives visible in movies, in television and in the media in general… So I think his whole life was about visibility and for me I think that is the number one issue. I think as time goes on history is definitely going to be on our side because as more and more people are out people will know who we are. I mean it’s hard to discriminate against someone who’s standing right next to you and saying this is a gay person, this is a lesbian standing right next to you.”<br /><br />VITO is an important documentary that everyone in the LGBT and the heterosexual community should see. The film shot in Berlin is about the opposite attraction of a respectable banker Ernst and his unconventional partner Tobias. The sudden appearance of Uta, Ernst’s eccentric school friend, fundamentally changes their relationship. Uta does not approve of Tobias and tries to break them up. MEN TO KISS charmingly proves that homosexuality can play another role in gay movies and replaces common clichés with authentic everyday stories. The film will be presented May 10th at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 8:30P. The film’s star Frank Christian Marx will be present for a Q &amp; A following the film.<br /><br />JOBRIATH AD, directed by Kieran Turner is about the first openly gay rock star that arrived on the glam-rock scene in the 1970’s. This fascinating documentary spotlights his life, music and groundbreaking influence. Jobriath stated at the time, “I am the true fairy of rock”. His brief but fascinating career as an openly gay performer, sometimes called ‘the American Bowie’ is uncovered by this enthralling documentary. Adored by MORRISSEY and THE PET SHOP BOYS this is a celebration of a singer-songwriter whose legacy will now be rediscovered. The Director Kieran Turner will be present for the screening and a Q &amp; A following the film at the Brattle Theatre on Friday, May 11th at 9P.<br /><br />GIRLTRASH: All Night Long (A Work in Progress) is directed by Alexander Kondracke but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the film will not be shown during the Boston LGBT Film Festival. Hopefully the film will be rescheduled in the near future.<br /><br />UNFIT: Ward vs Ward is a documentary by Katie Carmichael and Edwin Scharlau. The film raises the question of who is more fit to raise a child: a convicted killer or a lesbian? In 1995 a judge in Pensacola, Florida declared the father, a convicted killer, was more fit. This is the story of that case and its aftermath. The documentary will be presented at Brattle Theatre on May 13th at 4:30P. We also had the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers about crucial issues facing our LGBT community.<br /><br />LOVE FREE OR DIE is the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Winner of U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize for An Agent of Change. The film follows Bishop Gene Robinson who came under fire in 2003 when he became the first openly gay man to be elected to the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire. Since then he has battled for LGBT people from small town churches in New Hampshire to Washington’s Lincoln Memorial to London’s Lambeth Palace, as he calls for all to stand for equality, inspiring bishops, priests and ordinary folk to come out from the shadows and change history. LOVE FREE OR DIE will be presented at the Brattle Theatre, Cambridge, Massachusetts on Monday, May 7th at 7P. We talked to Bishop Robinson and Director Macky Alston about the film and their commitment to LGBT equality.<br /><br />When asked what is his personal commitment to LGBT civil rights, Bishop Robinson, stated, “For me the impetus for this is both religious and secular. That is to say, I came out in 1986 when I was 39 years old and I was a priest of the church and it was clear to me that religious institutions; Judaism, Islam, Christianity, were really responsible for 95% of the discrimination that we experience. Even non-religious people in the culture use religious reasoning to argue against us and keep us from our full civil rights. I felt that I had a foot in both communities, the religious community and the LGBT community of which I was so proud to be a part. I felt a special calling to try to reconcile these two groups and to get the church to see how it had been oppressing for two thousand years and to see what I could do in my own small way to change that; to both change the church so that it became not just tolerate but embracing it and celebratory of us. To say to the LGBT community, ‘You know the church has not served you well in the past, in fact it has been abusive of you, but there are Christians and Jews and Muslims who will welcome you and help you answer your own spiritual needs and the religious institution you left years ago because you were treated so badly might be the place for you now.”<br /><br />With over forty feature-length films there are also a number of LGBT dramas, comedies and musicals telling our stories. From Director Wendy Jo Carlton, (HANNAH FREE) comes JAMIE AND JESSIE ARE NOT TOGETHER. We talked to Wendy Jo about her romantic musical comedy that tells the story of two queer girls whose codependent, loyal friendship is fraught with erotic tension based on Wendy Jo’s own experiences of loving the wrong women. The film is about suburban supermom Eileen Cleary (Kathleen Turner) who is nominated for the coveted Catholic Woman of the Year Award at her local parish. It appears she’s a shoe-in but one final test remains and that is introducing her family to the church board that includes Monsignor Murphy (Richard Chamberlain) for the seal of approval. This is where the plot thickens when she must face the truth about her nonconformist family, something she has been in denial of for years. With her gay daughter (Emily Deschanel) about to marry her life partner, her unhappily married son (Jason Ritter) having an affair with the local manicurist and her own marriage to a recovered alcoholic pulling at the seams, Eileen decides to take action, ramping up her meddling to hilarious new heights. As she does, she begins to question what truly makes a family perfect.<br /><br />When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Renton stated, “Well as a filmmaker I try to think about what it is and what would be a different way to tell a story. When Prop 8 was passed in California I turned to a short film that I had just made called LOVE IS LOVE. I did a minor re-edit and put some cards up in the front of the film and basically dedicated it to everyone that voted ‘Yes’ on Prop 8. The film was a comedy about what it would be like for heterosexuals to live in a predominately gay world. So my hope in doing this was to get it out there. I put it up on Youtube and it did get quite a lot of hits. This is the 20th anniversary of Equality Forum 2012 that takes place May 3rd to May 6th in Philadelphia. Equality Forum is a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with a focus on education. There are also lots of dance parties, entertainment and just basic fun events. This year Israel is Equality Forum International focus.<br /><br />When asked what special guests and events are taking place this year, Lazin stated, “Well we really do have the best and the brightest in terms of all of the major issues. Whether it’s our religious colloquy, transgender, a panel on Israel, racial panel, legal panel, political panel, sports, military, marriage equality panel as well as our national youth panel. There are fifteen regional, state, national and international organizations that put on programs about themselves and their mission. I would say that all of these panels are highlights but certainly for example our National Politics Panel. The moderator is Chuck Wolfe, President and CEO, Gay &amp; Lesbian Victory Fund, with panelists Clarke Cooper, Executive Director, Log Cabin Republicans, Rebecca Isaacs, Executive Director, Equality Federation, Patrick Guerriero, who was really the founder of The Gill Action Fund, Rebecca Isaacs, Executive Director of Equality Federation and Andy Tobias, the Treasurer of the DNC and the highest ranking openly gay person at the DNC. There are over 100 features and shorts participating in this year’s film festival. Opening night on May 3rd will take place at the Institute of Contemporary Art with the screening of the Italian film LOOSE CANNONS (Mine Vaganti) directed by Ferzan Ozpetek with English subtitles. This smart comedy is about the conservative Catholic Cantone family who own and operate a pasta factory in southern Italy. Tommaso is the youngest son who lives in Rome where he studies literature and lives with his boyfriend. Tommaso decides to tell his parents the truth about himself but when he is finally ready to come out in front of the entire family his older brother Antonio ruins his plans. Opening night is co-presented by the Consolato Generale d'Italia Boston with opening remarks by the Italian Consul General Giuseppe Pastorelli.<br /><br />When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Dixit stated, “Growing up here in Boston and being part of the local Boston community, I currently sit on the Board of The History Project which is now in its 31st year, where we document the history of the LGBT community. The History Project has been a long-term supporter of the film festival. In fact we send most of our films to The History Project for preservation after they’re screened at the festival. I love their tag line, “You Make History &amp; We’ll Preserve it.” And that sort of sums it up. We’ve made incredible strides in Massachusetts for marriage equality to recently having The Trans Bill passed which was an amazing moment to be there at the State House having Governor Deval Patrick sign the bill into law. And that also translates into what we do at the festival where we have a trans panel about the perception of the transgender community. I also sit on the Board of the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD). In fact we have been with Mary Bonauto at the federal appeals court fighting DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). So all of this is extremely exciting and it’s amazing to be in such a vibrant community where history is taking place yet again.”<br /><br />On Tuesday April 17th to kick off the Boston LGBT Film Festival, there will be the 4th annual Splash Party held at Post 390, 406 Stuart Street, Boston MA from 6P to 8P. It’s kind of a hot topic right now and I personally support HRC (the Human Rights Campaign) in every way I can. You know financially, physically, I attend their dinners and all their functions. I go to all the Prop 8 rallies and gather signatures and sign petitions myself.” Jeffrey lives in California so when asked what his reaction was to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit finding Prop 8 unconstitutional, he added, “Well I’m so happy they found it unconstitutional because it is. I think the struggle for equal rights for all of us in our community has gone on for so long, for over fifty years. I was excited to finally see this opinion to be stated so eloquently. I was really very pleased.”<br /><br />Jeffrey Sanker is the founder of LA-based White Party Entertainment, Inc. Sanker's passion for parties began during the early eighties in New York City. Working at such legendary locations as Studio 54, Palladium and Private Eyes, he fine-tuned his skills as a promoter and special event producer. He has also hosted parties for numerous celebrities over the years. We talked to Morrison about FOR &amp; AGAINST and his spin on our LGBT community’s concerns in this Presidential election year.<br /><br />When asked what’s his impression of the anti-gay GOP candidates running for President, Morrison stated, “Oh God, I mean the answer to that question is implicit in the question. I mean it’s disappointing, really disappointing. This is not a winning issue for them. I think they’re using the 2004 playbook and the 2008 playbook where they could turn out people who were against marriage equality but the polls are showing that is not the case. So I think it’s just like this war on women. It’s like they put their eggs in one basket and that’s just not going to do it. They’re going to be shocked when I think they’re going to lose significantly by concentrating on these issues. But even more frustrating is when you look at the LGBT Republican groups. Now I have no problem with if you want to be fiscally conservative, I get that. That’s part of the American discussion. We have different views, that’s how we get good policy. But to suggest that you can be for any of these candidates, whether it’s Mitt Romney or even Ron Paul, without examining fundamentally what their positions are on our very identities bothers me. There’s a lot of people who say that Ron Paul is in favor of marriage equality but the fact is he’s not. He hides behind these states rights issues and then he goes and supports DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which clearly is against us.”<br /><br />Morrison is a liberal-leaning pundit not afraid to challenge convention. He is a graduate of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and holds a law degree from Columbia University with an emphasis on Constitutional Law and Civil Rights. Jim ran for the New Jersey State Senate and successfully litigated the first sexual orientation discrimination case against a high school student. GIRL BAR is the largest dance and entertainment group for lesbians in the United States. After moving to LA from New York in the late 80’s, Sachs and Gans recognized the need for an upscale nightclub catering to the lesbian community. “We wanted to do something to help make the lesbian community more visible and create a place for women to come together,” said GIRL BAR co-founder, Sandy Sachs. “GIRL BAR is a place where our patrons can come and feel safe, feel comfortable and most of all feel empowered,” adds Robin. Now the duo is producing GIRL BAR DINAH SHORE WEEKEND LAS VEGAS April 27th to 29th with Linda Fusco and Michele Agnew of TRUCK STOP GIRLZ. We talked about the move to Las Vegas and Robin’s spin on crucial issues facing our LGBT community.<br /><br />When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Dr. Gans stated, “Well first of all I’m a licensed clinical psychologist in the State of California and certainly I know what it’s like to be coming out. Actually when I was in college and having those feelings when I was in high school, I went to private school back east, so one of the things that I always wanted to do was work with the gay community to help fellow gays and lesbians to not only come out but to have clearly a much better understanding of themselves and a much more integrated self. So I have several patients that are within the gay and lesbian community and I’ve worked with couples. When I was training I worked with the LA Gay and Lesbian Center for a year and I worked with troubled teens. I actually did an internship with them for a year, some who were definitely gay at the ages of fifteen and sixteen. Certainly I feel a commitment within my community and I feel a personal commitment in general just being involved with HRC and with any fundraiser, and anything that really contributes to awareness and obviously political rights in the LGBTQ community. But personally I would say absolutely working as a therapist. The play takes on medical malpractice, gay marriage and LGBTQ family rights. The play is about after a routine medical procedure goes tragically wrong, a lawsuit ensues and the lives of both the patient's family and the doctor charged with her care are transformed. This is a lovingly drawn portrait of how we grieve and how we heal. LOVE ALONE will have its World Premiere at Trinity Rep March 16th and runs through May 27th.<br /><br />When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Deborah stated. “I’ve been with my partner for a long time and we have two young children together. So it’s really important to me when I realized that I had not been writing plays with gay characters in them, which is really bizarre and embarrassing. So it was important to me to put a gay family in the center of the story. The character Helen who has lost her partner of twenty years, her grief is grief we can all, regardless of sexuality can recognize and empathize with. This is the story of two women who are deeply in love and the unexpected death of one of them in minor surgery is a huge emotional tragedy for her partner, for the couple’s daughter and I think to some degree, which I think is important, for the audience to experience that too. And to let go of distinguishing gay-straight and just be reminded that a devoted couple regardless of any of these labels you want to put on it, is a relationship that we all recognize and empathize with.”<br /><br />LOVE ALONE received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award to support its premiere at Trinity Repertory Company and also was recognized with an Honorable Mention by the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award. Deborah Salem Smith’s previous honors include an Emerging American Artist Fulbright for playwriting in Dublin, Ireland, where she worked with the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's national theater, and served as a Visiting Academic at the Trinity College School of Drama. He was on the GOP ballot in New Hampshire and Michigan and has received confirmation that his name will appear on the ballot in California, New York, Maryland, North Carolina and Puerto Rico. Fred Karger was the first to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States on March 23, 2011. Throughout his career, Karger has worked on nine presidential campaigns and served as a senior consultant on campaigns for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford. He retired after 27 years and has since become an activist for gay rights, including his organization Californians Against Hate (now Rights Equal Rights) to investigate the LDS Church and the National Organization for Marriage in their campaigns against marriage equality in California and Maine.<br /><br />When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Karger stated, “Well, as someone who struggled so much as an adolescent and through my teen years, someone who went to psychiatrists when I was in college to try and switch because it was the early seventies, it sounded viable; you thought there were options. Fortunately the three different ones that I went to, which was a trial to see which one I would go to, I asked all three about switching, fortunately each said, ‘Sorry, we can’t do that. We can work with you but it’s impossible.’ So I’m glad I had some very good help and advise back then when I was twenty-one. Actually I met somebody named Dan Brewster when I was twenty-one and he was just this great role model and I realized that it was okay to be gay. You could be like Dan Brewster. There wasn’t even a word ‘gay’ back then, it kind of evolved like everything else. I had to struggle and live a double life. I didn’t tell my parents until I was forty-one, or my sibling. I really didn’t come out publicly or professionally until I was fifty-six years old. And while I had a healthy gay life it was very limited and it was a terrible existence to have that double life. So now I’m into my sixties and have absolutely no hang-ups obviously as running for President. I really want to let that message resonate throughout the country and as it happens through all the international coverage I’ve gotten, through the world. If you happen to be gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender or queer, you can do anything you want to do. You can even run for President of The United States.”<br /><br />Fred Karger is one of the bravest gay activists that our LGBT community has. His mere visibility in the most homophobic race for President this country has ever seen will be something to watch and take note of. I use to identify as bisexual but then I thought about it, well bisexual sounds like fifty-fifty and I’m not fifty-fifty so maybe I shouldn’t use that term. We talked to Ned about the map he has created revealing the encouraging news that 42% of Americans now live in the 21 states that offer some form of legal recognition at the state level for same-gender relationships. The map illustrates the states offering partial equality as well as itemizing the 30 states where various bans on marriage by law, by constitution, or both law and constitution that remain in effect.<br /><br />Ned Flaherty lives in Massachusetts where gay marriage is celebrating its eighth anniversary in May. When asked what his reaction has been to the recent momentum of gay marriage passing in Washington state, Prop 8 being found unconstitutional in California by the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and the possibility of marriage equality passing in New Jersey and Maryland, Flaherty stated, “I expect that every state that passes marriage equality in any significant way is going to have the same experience we’ve had for the last eight years in Massachusetts and that is first of all none of the dire consequences threatened by the religious evangelicals or the rightwing Republicans have ever occurred here. The second thing is a couple of dramatic improvements. One is there’s more business revenue and more tax revenue into the state government simply as the result of the additional marriage business going on here. And the third thing is Massachusetts has one of the lowest divorce rates now in the nation. The nation hasn’t had such a divorce rate as low as Massachusetts for decades. So I think that among those states you mentioned and the others that you didn’t mention, as they all move closer towards marriage equality, they’re going to find more business, more government tax revenue and none of the frightening harms that the equality opponents always talk about.”<br /><br />As Project Manager Election 2012 Flaherty has also created the Election 2012 Project at Marriage Equality USA to show twelve major ways in which LGBT people still are not equal citizens, to expand the national dialogue and to provide usable data to candidates, journalists and voters. Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson Host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ participated in this historic discussion with members of the press, AFER Board President Chad Griffin and lead co-counsel Ted Olson and David Boies. In an opinion authored by Judge Stephen Reinhardt, the Ninth Circuit concluded that Proposition 8 violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, “Proposition 8 serves no purpose and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples. The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort,” Judge Reinhardt wrote.<br /><br />In his opening remarks about this enormous victory for our LGBT community Ted Olson stated, “When we started this trial the very first words that we spoke when the trial began in San Francisco was that this case is about marriage and equality. It’s about the right to marry and this decision today affirms the importance in American society of the right to marry. The very proponents who opposed us in this case talked about how important marriage was. The difference is that they wanted to keep it for themselves. They wanted to deny this relationship, this institution, this building block of our society, the most fundamental right according to the Supreme Court that we have in America. They wanted to deny that right to a large segment of our society because they felt that those persons were unequal or undeserving and should be treated differently under the California Constitution. This case was about marriage and it’s also about freedom and decency. How we are going to treat our fellow citizens, our brothers and sisters, our cousins and our neighbors. Are we going to treat them with the same dignity that we ourselves enjoy in this country? The District Court earlier and the Ninth Circuit today ringingly reaffirmed the right to equality, the fundamental right to marriage and the fact that it cannot be denied to citizens on the basis of their sexual orientation or the basis of sex. This is a very significant milepost on the way to equality in this country. We’re not there yet. One of these days soon I suspect, I feel strongly that we will be. First of all just by being openly gay and second of all performing in drag. I think a lot of people don’t realize that drag is a political act in itself because of what you have to go through just the minute you walk out the door. I mean people for some reason see it as an open invitation to be very hostile and abusive or weird. Not always, people can be very cool and funny and nice but it’s dangerous, especially for people who don’t live in a big city. Taxi’s will just fly right by you. Now that I’m on television I have a platform and a voice to hopefully make a change and be a role model. You know we’ve been fighting since the sixties for equality. We are making progress but then we get pushed back a little and then we make more progress. You know it’s just fighting for what is right and what straight people have. Why wouldn’t we have the same rights as anyone else? We love the same, we’re human and it just happens that we love the same sex. I’m heavily involved with HRC and GLAAD. I support all those organizations that have really made such progress and have put this into the forefront of society. Especially with the government, you know we’re taxpayers and we’re part of the community. Why are we not getting the same rights as everyone else? I can only hope in this lifetime that I see it come full circle and that we get the same rights.”<br /><br />Chinosi is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ teens who are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers after facing bullying incidents. Robear shared his personal experiences of being bullied and gay bashed. Recent polls show high levels of support for LGBT people among Catholics yet the Pope and bishops continue to lead attacks on civil rights for gay people. In Pope Benedict’s 2012 outrageous New Year’s speech to diplomats from approximately 180 countries the Pope said policies allowing gay marriage “threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.” We talked to Marianne about being Catholic and issues facing our LGBT community.<br /><br />When asked for her reaction to Pope Benedict’s hurtful and homophobic attack on our LGBT community, Duddy-Burke, stated, “Unfortunately it’s become almost a New Year’s ritual for the Pope to attack same-gender marriage and marriage equality. We’ve seen it year after year in his speeches when he’s looking at the state of the world. It’s tragic, it’s sad and it’s very misinformed. Once again it just shows the deep divide that exists between the leaders of the Catholic Church and regular Catholics who are out there in their lives and their jobs and their neighbors and their families, who know and love gay and lesbian people and bisexual and transgender people. And who more and more support our rights to have loving, committed relationships legally affirmed.”<br /><br />Marianne Duddy-Burke received a Masters in Theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was an Honors graduate of Wellesley College. Marianne speaks regularly at conferences around the country on issues of importance to LGBT Catholics and their families. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans. Now that the 2012 Presidential race has begun we thought we’d get his spin on the GOP candidates running for President and where they stand on gay rights. We talked to Clarke about the Iowa Caucus with Romney and Santorum finishing head to head, the upcoming primaries, the GOP candidates who signed the Family Leader's anti-gay marriage pledge and more.<br /><br />The last time Democrats and Republicans were in agreement on LGBT issues was during the Carter-Ford election back in 1976. When asked where the Republican Party stands on our LGBT issues today, Cooper stated, “Well Charlotte that’s a very good question and that’s a question asked by fellow Republicans within the party. There’s actually a divide that’s mostly generational within the party. What I mean by that is one can look at the generational groups within the party. Log Cabin Republicans are only one of many ancillary groups in the party. We happen to be the gay group but you also have groups that are more generationally oriented. Young Republicans, College Republicans are where you find most of your millennials, the people who are thirty and under. Why is this important you ask? It is important because these are the registered Republicans who are either supportive of gay rights at best or minimally are agnostic when it comes to issues like marriage equality, employment nondiscrimination or at the time, the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. It’s a huge divide and that’s not just anecdotal it’s actually measured by internal polling by conservatives for conservatives and also reflective in polling in media like CNN, ABC, you name it. It is noted by the party that there is that shift.”<br /><br />Before taking the helm of the Log Cabin Republicans Clarke worked with the George W. Bush Administration for eight years and is an Army Reserve Captain who served in Iraq during DADT. Now that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been repealed we talked to him about what’s it like serving as an officer in the Army Reserve. What we have now is a party of clowns. Everyone is just using these very volatile, anti this, anti that, against this, against that, these people this, that who, what, all of this is made to create confusion. This is not solving any problems. These candidates are running on hatred. They’re running on anger. This is no process of a clear conscience of a nation. This is just pitting one group against the other and the oldest adage of Roman times, Caesar’s adage ‘Divide and Conquer.’ This is the oldest trick in the last 2000 years and they still play the game. As we head into the New Year it’s time to reflect on 2011 and chat about what 2012 will bring our LGBT community. This has been an amazing year for our LGBT community starting with the repeal and then the certification of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Last summer gay marriage finally passed in New York and the Respect of Marriage Act was introduced in the US Senate taking us a step closer to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act. The year ended on a fabulous note with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speech to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland stating “Some have suggested that gay rights and human rights are separate and distinct but in fact they are one and the same. Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights."<br /><br />When asked how she felt about gay marriage passing in her state Clinton stated, “Well I am a Cuomo-sexual. It was pretty exciting that our Governor was able to ride herd on some really wrangling gay organizations that had not been united in their effort to get gay marriage or marriage equality in the state. And he really did that and he was able to get some big money interest in to do the fight and also to promise senators who had voted for gay marriage that we would be behind them when they ran for reelection and that’s really happening now. So I find it really exciting and since I do live in New York, I’m a New York resident, I feel a lot of pressure now. My girl and I have been together almost twenty four years and our little six year old neighbor from across the hall in New York is like on our case to get married. It’s a lot of pressure.”<br /><br />We also addressed Obama and LGBT advancements, the anti-gay GOP presidential candidates, LGBTQ teen bullying crisis and more. We chatted with Rees and Oduye at a special screening of the film presented by Focus Features and the Boston LGBT Film Festival at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Massachusetts. Pariah is the feature-length expansion of writer/director Dee Rees' award-winning 2007 short film Pariah. Spike Lee is among the feature's executive producers.<br /><br />Adepero Oduye, who had earlier starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry and is a gifted student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents' marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike's development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague's daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity - sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.<br /><br />When asked about dealing with homophobia among the Afro-American community, Dees stated, “I wasn’t trying to make any general statements about homophobia in the Afro-American community because it’s such a varied experience. I think there’s still homophobia across all communities. But in this particular story I actually want to show how people reacted to it differently. Alike’s mother and father have different reactions versus Bina, the love interest and even the fast girls at school. I wanted to show how there’s not a single response to it within the community and that’s what complicates Alike’s journey as she tries to find herself. And I just wanted to show, if people take away one thing, I want them to know that it’s OK not to check a box; it’s OK to be yourself because Alike’s struggle is as much within the gay community as it is in the straight community.
