Filmmakers Talk Impact Of Our Stories Part 2 (AUDIO)

 

In the conclusion of our audio montage series Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks to filmmakers at the 28th Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF). First we talked with multi-award-winning director, producer and executive producer Marc Smolowitz who has been significantly involved with 50+ successful independent films. Marc had two films at PIFF this year that couldn’t be more different. First was “Lady Champagne” a bold, irreverent comedy directed by D’Arcy Drollinger. This feature film embraces camp, absurdity and unapologetic humor, drawing comparisons to classic spoof comedies. His second film was the documentary “Uncle Roy” tracing the remarkable life skater and photographer Roy Blakey through the eyes of his niece. Next we chatted with filmmaker Keri Pickett who directed “Uncle Roy” that chronicles nine decades of Roy Blakey’s personal and professional archives. Growing up Keri barely knew her enigmatic uncle until she followed him to New York to pursue photography where an unexpected friendship took shape. As their lives intertwine she discovers his groundbreaking 1972 book about his legacy as a pioneer of gay photography. When Roy’s health declines Keri cares for him while preserving the stories he kept so carefully guarded. 

Then we chatted with directors Megan Rico and Kade Atwood about their film “Edie Arnold is a Loser” also written by Rico. The award-winning feature film tells the story of a timid dork Edie accidentally taking the spotlight when she starts a punk band becoming an icon to the rest of the losers at her all-girls Catholic school. Megan Rico and Kade Atwood have created a vivid, fresh and fun musical ode to weirdos and outsiders. Lead actress Adi Madden Cabrera delivers a terrific performance in a wonderfully unique coming-of-age film that is as full of heart as it is of laughs. “Edie Arnold is a Loser” won Best Film at the Seattle International Film Festival. We concluded our coverage with “100-Years of Schooner Hindu” a Provincetown legacy directed by Angela McNearney about the sailing schooner Hindu which has been shaped by wind, water and mariners devoted to her for more than 100 years.

Filmmakers Talk Importance Of Our Storytelling (AUDIO)

 

In the first audio montage of this two-part series Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks to filmmakers at the 28th Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF). First we talked with visual conceptual artist Jay Critchley who created this year’s PIFF trailer with production by Arvid Tomayko. Jay’s performance work and environmental activism have traversed the globe performing in Argentina, Japan, England, Holland, Germany, Colombia and the United States. Jay’s social art practice also includes running the Provincetown Community Compact which works with artists and sponsors the annual Provincetown Harbor Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla a fundraiser that has raised millions for AIDS and women’s health that’s celebrating its 39th year on September 12th. Then we chatted with director Sam McConnell and Brock Yurich about their feature film “Test” which won PIFF Audience Award Best Narrative Feature and was written by Yurich who also stars as Eddie. The film is about a small-town Ohio bodybuilder (Brock Yurich) who clashes with his devout mother as he pursues his dreams under a renowned coach. We talked about their inspiration for making this film and their spin on our current issues. 

Next we talked to director Fredgy Noël about her short film “Hail Maya” about a faithful Catholic undergraduate on her last night in the dorms who trades salvation for sin by diving headfirst into a tangle of lust, love and betrayal that confession can’t absolve. Fredgy a graduate of the MFA Graduate Film program at New York University is the recipient of the Spike Lee Production Grant and the Sandra Ifraimova Production Fund. Her last short film New York Day Women premiered at the Tribeca Festival where Noël’s work has screened twice. Currently she is working on her first feature film. Then we concluded this segment with director Fergus Campbell and producer Lola Lafia whose feature film “Sparks” was honored with a PIFF John Schlesinger Narrative Special Mention. “Sparks” is a beautifully strange and unexpectedly tender film about identity, friendship and the need to escape as a group of teenagers in Sparks, Nevada attempt time travel exploring an urban legend that a Nevada reservoir is a time portal.

Robert Kesten Talks Stonewall National Museum (AUDIO)

 

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with Robert Kesten, President and CEO of Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Founded in 1973 the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library has grown into the largest lending library of its kind in the U.S. with more than 34,000 books and audio-visual materials. The archives also contain more than 6 million pages of documents and more than 2,000 objects of critical importance to our LGBTQ history. Rotating exhibitions, talks, lectures and films have attracted thousands to the Stonewall National Museum each year enriching the lives of countless others. Some of the upcoming events include their fourth annual Gala fundraiser where they will ceremoniously and historically induct architect, philanthropist and president of the Arcus Foundation Jon Stryker, retired Congressman Barney Frank and Grammy winning singer-songwriter Janis Ian into its nationally traveling “Standing on the Shoulders of Heroes” exhibition on February 21st. We talked to Kesten about what he would like to accomplish at the Stonewall National Museum and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. 

Robert Kesten is a seasoned nonprofit executive with extensive experience in the for profit and government sectors. Kesten has had the unique experience of working on the break-up of the USSR on the ground in the Soviet Union and being in Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring in Egypt. This has given him a special understanding of human rights, the need for democracy and the role education plays in the transformation of nations and their people. Kesten’s varied career also includes writing and producing an award-winning documentary film on learning the lessons from the Holocaust winning the Jury Prize at the Moscow Film Festival.
